Journalists detained in Belarus during protests (photo, video)


More than 120 people were detained in various Belarusian cities on Friday during protests against detentions during the election campaign. Among them are journalists of well-known publications.

The last day of collecting signatures for alternative candidates ended with spontaneous actions across the country. People lined up in «living chains» along the streets and avenues in solidarity with the detained activists.

More than 120 people are on the list of detainees published by Vesna on June 19. Of these, 80 in Minsk, more than 8 — in Bobruisk, at least 9 — in Gomel, 7 — in Vitebsk, more than 6 — in Mogilev, 9 — in Novopolotsk, one — in Molodechno, Grodno, Orsha and Slutsk.

According to Radio Svoboda, among the detainees are its journalists, as well as journalists from Reuters, Belsat, Tut.by and Euroradio.

Most of the detained journalists were later released.

The sixth presidential election in the history of sovereign Belarus is scheduled for Sunday, August 9. Alexander Lukashenko, 65, has ruled the country for 25 years.

Potential candidate Viktor Babaryko, two leaders of the initiative groups Eduard Babaryko and Serhiy Tikhanovsky, were arrested. Criminal proceedings have been instituted against more than 30 people and more than 100 administrative cases.
